So who is Peter Dutton?
He’s a former police officer turned Liberal politician from Queensland representing the electorate of Dickson since 2001. This is how he’s voted on a few issues to help you understand what he’s like (a more comprehensive list can be found on TheyVoteForYou.org)
- Decreasing availability to welfare payments (and then drug
testing those who are on them, a discriminatory practice) as well as then
putting people on welfare on restricted debit cards to control what they can
and can’t buy- He’s voted for deregulating university fees (which would give
students massive amounts of debt to pay off over their life time)- He has voted for decreasing funding to the ABC and SBS
- He was for getting rid of penalty rates (which negatively
affects low income earners who relied on that extra money)- He voted to increase his own paycheck and parliamentary
entitlements- Wants to reduce corporate tax rates
- Strengthening gun control laws (everyone has at least one
agreeable thing and we found it)- He’s voted against protections for refugees (duh, he hates them)
- Voted against increasing Aboriginal land rights (and boycotted
Rudd’s apology to the Stolen Generation back in 2008, though has since said he
regrets that)- Voted against protecting the Great Barrier Reef (which is dying
from climate change – something the Liberal party refuses to act on, even
removing the emissions reduction target from the National Energy Guarantee
legislation)- While he’s ignoring climate change he’s laughing at those who
are affected by it and was caught making a joke about rising sea levels in the pacific islands- He’s voted against increasing investment into renewable energy
- He voted against a Royal Commission into Violence and Abuse
against People With Disabilities- He voted No in the same sex marriage plebiscite (so he’s
homophobic)- Voted against increasing media diversity in Australia (which
suits him just fine as the Murdoch media empire is pro-Liberal and will push to
get him in so he can protect them from paying tax as he’s for corporate tax
cuts)He’s most famous for in the past few
years taking over dealing with refugees from former Minister of Immigration Scott Morrison. Here’s just a few details about that:
- The UN has labelled our treatment of refugees torture and a violation of
human rights- He literally told us not to be compassionate towards refugees
- He smears refugees, painting them as “welfare bludgers” but
if he actually provided them with welfare it’d be far cheaper than the half a million per year per person tax
payer bill for keeping people in offshore detention.- Some of these people have been held for over 5 years including children
who have spent their entire lives in detention- He’s cut welfare to refugees who are in Australia to receive medical attention
- His hatred of refugees ends though when they become white. He wanted to fast track visas for white South African farmers. His
racism was incredibly overt there.- He introduced new rules that made it harder for Muslim refugees during
Ramadan. Many were served pork and went starving instead of properly breaking
their fasts.- Rates of depression and self harm are extremely high in offshore
detention. A dozen refugees have died – some from suicide. Others have died
from violence and improper medical treatment. Hunger strikes are common. Children self harm – including a 12
year old girl who recently tried to set herself on fire because she couldn’t
stand being trapped in Nauru indefinitely- He downplays the severity of the physical and sexual assaults on refugees in detention
- The ongoing limbo is incredibly stressful to refugees. These
people are innocent. There’s no doubt that they’re genuine refugees and not a
threat to Australia and yet they’re continued to be detained as an example of
our hard stance on refugees- There’s so much to say about the ongoing issues of our treatment of refugees that it’s impossible to put into just one post
- Dutton also supported Trump’s Muslim travel ban
He’s a racist vile and cruel man who punishes the poor and would rather see children suffer than to let a few refugees into this country.
And he wants to lead this country.
