in the halloween special.. whenever max interacted with any of the other campers, he wasn’t full of malice as you’d expect. sure, he was still his little shithead self, manipulative as can be, but he still showed some signs of lessening hatred towards the other kids.
before even a full minute passes in the episode, when he asks why they’re listening to the science speech? instead of insulting he it literally just asks why they’re doing it. pre-season 2 you’d expect him to call it stupid or something.
later on in spooky island when nikki points out the “doors on the ground”? instead of calling her a dumbass he just corrects her and they go right on in
when enid gives him the map. he admits it’s helpful with literally no visible inwards struggle.
and he actually says space kid did a good job breaking the window. even if it seems sarcastic, it’s still a good sign.

overall
seemed less quick to insulting the othersas they went on their medicine hunt.. the only times he’s outwardly malicious is when he’s at risk of getting infected, which is a pretty valid response.
i could be misremembering how he was in earlier seasons, but…
really seems like he’s softened up a little since the S2 finale, even if we’re only seeing it in this episode so far.
