Iconic seafarer beards became a trend to scare away pesky mermaids.

Mermaid, seeing a bald pirate: Zero threat…!
Mermaid, seeing a hairy, bearded pirate: If I get too close their face tentacles will eat me…!

Most mermaids only grow short beards as not to scare baby mermaids (longer beards look like the tentacled mouths of hungry squids and octopuses).

Pirates use this innate fear to their advantage to protect themselves from mermaids, hence the iconic beards and hat:

mermaids would have to be dark-skinned and chubby to survive in the ocean 

water isnt a great means of protecting oneself from the sun
theyd have to be very dark if they were shallow mermaids and they didnt want to be constantly sunburnt
and they may be paler if they lived deeper in the water but theyd have to be buff and/or chubby as hell to resist the water pressure and cold of the deep sea

what im saying is pale-ass white skinny mermaids are just unrealistic

Mermaids “talk” via whale-like humming. Unlike humans who rely on pre-defined words for expression, mermaids can directly convey and understand emotions and ideas based on tone.

Human: Hey bitch
Mermaid, analyzing: [playful tone, possibly a greeting…!]
Mermaid: Bitch!!! Bitch!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Due to mermaids communicating based solely on tone, they’re able to not only learn human languages quickly, but assess a human’s true character the moment they speak. 

It’s no coincidence that throughout history, rowdy sailors and pirates have been drowned by mermaids.
